Faraday Cage-like Cellphone Radiation Protection

A Faraday cage or Faraday shield is an enclosure that was named after British scientist Michael Faraday, who invented it in 1836 to conduct electromagnetic and electronic experiments free from ambient electromagnetic interference. 

The enclosure, or cage, which can be just small enough to work in or as large as a room or a building, is created by lining the exterior with conducting material or a conducting mesh material.  The purpose of such an enclosed cage is to block external static and non-static electrical fields from entering the space.  

These cages offer an EMF free zone this way -  any external static electrical field causes the electric charges within the cage's conducting material to be distributed in such a way that they cancel the field's effect in the cage's interior.

In addition to providing EMF Free Zones for electronic testing, this phenomenon is also used to protect electronic equipment from electrostatic discharge or lightening strike, and to protect consumers from unwanted EMF exposure.

These types of cages shield from external electromagnetic radiation if the conductor material is thick enough and any holes are significantly smaller than the wavelength of the radiation being emitted. However they cannot block static or slowly varying magnetic fields, such as the Earth's magnetic field (for example, a compass will still work inside the cage).

Certain computer or technology assembly procedures and electronics test procedures  that require an environment that is totally free of electromagnetic interference can be carried out within what is called a cage, or screen room. These rooms are designed to be spaces that are completely enclosed by one or more layers of a fine metal mesh or perforated sheet metal. The metal layers in the ceiling and walls are grounded to dissipate any electric currents generated from external or internal electromagnetic fields; floor mats are similarly grounded, and thus the room blocks a large amount of the electromagnetic field (EMF) interference.

In the same way, these cellphone radiation protection cases act like a Faraday cage  in reverse shielding you by blocking EMF from cellphone emissions (in the form of microwave radiation) and preventing it from entering your body and "electronically polluting" your immediate environment.

The reception of microwave radiation and radio wave transmissions (which re both forms of electromagnetic radiation) to or from the cellphone antenna within the Faraday shielding case are blocked by the case lining material.
